Diary of an entrepreneur

The days are long and work can be frustrating but you couldn’t wish for (a) better company. Plucky entrepreneur and Infego Communications CEO and publisher Julie Gill dons her glad rags for the Fast50, and gets in some training for the Christmas party

October 17: The Fast50 awards are fast approaching and I’m scheduled to speak. Shouldn’t be nervous but I am. Maybe it’s because this is a big occasion for Unlimited and Deloitte and the companies that enter, and for the first time I will really feel like I’m up there as Infego CEO.

October 18: Meeting with Deloitte this afternoon to run through my lines. The awards are being held tonight simultaneously in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Luckily I only speak at the Auckland awards because I’m nervous as hell.

October 19: Thank God that’s over. Didn’t fluff my lines, and everyone really seems to like the idea of the awards, especially the companies in the top ten.

November 1: Can’t believe we’ve been in the new office for a month already. I still haven’t got used to the view. The interesting part for me is that we’re getting to know each other in this small company. I’d have to say that we are all very different but I think humour brings us all together. I don’t feel like I’ve had much time for humour but I do like coming downstairs for a cup of tea and a bit of a laugh. We were a bunch of individuals who worked at IDG but in different offices on the one floor. Now it’s about building a new company culture, pointing out that everyone has a chance to say how they want this company run.

November 14: I’m meeting so many people who’ve had a relationship with Unlimited for years but never actually met anyone. It’s been a major bloody shock, actually.

December 1: Felt really, really proud when the redesigned issue came out today. It’s been an interesting process really learning to trust the editorial team. Also it is the first time I felt Unlimited was mine, or Infego’s.

December 7: We’ve got 42 Below on board for the Christmas cocktails and the office is looking fab. Tonight’s the night! We’re gonna celebrate. Merry Christmas. Merry Infego. Merry Unlimited. Merry Actv8. We’ve put out the October, November and December/January issues, the Fast50 thing was a big moment for me, and we’ve redesigned Unlimited. I feel like I’ve been living through extremes for the last couple of months.
